Motor Pool Cleanliness

Leaders at all levels must ensure that soldiers have an environment to work in that is both productive and safe. First Sergeant’s, Motor Sergeants and First Line Supervisor’s be proactive and show care and concern for the conditions your soldiers work in. First line supervisors have the direct responsibility that their soldiers have a safe and clean environment on a daily basis. First line supervisor must ensure that soldiers:

            1. Clean as you go. - This is provided that soldiers have a clean and safe environment already. If not, operations must cease to clean the work area and rid the area of any safety hazards. Clean as you go means that if grease, oil or anything else is spilled clean it up immediately. Many accidents have happened because of someone’s "I’ll clean it later." attitude. Place all dirty rags in the appropriate containers when finished using them. Clean up dry sweep and place in the appropriate container. Place TM’s back in library when not in use.

            2. If you don’t need it now, put it back. - When using anything, tools, POL, clean-up material, return to the appropriate storage area.

            3. Keep your tools clean and serviceable. - Just as you clean as you go, you must keep your tools clean. A greasy wrench means busted knuckles or worse. Using an unserviceable tool can cause severe injury or even death.

            4. Clean thoroughly daily. - This means, take out the trash, clean the latrines, and put back anything not in use. Sweep and clean the floors. Keep offices clean and straight.

            5. Clean thoroughly weekly. - This means, move it out of the way and clean behind it. Clean out the wall locker, take coveralls home and wash. Sweep, and wash the walls and floors, then squeegee out all the water.

            6. The Line. - First Sergeants, Platoon Sgt’s and First Line Supervisors must ensure that vehicles are parked on line, clean, free of trash, and topped off. Also, the line must be straight and policed, which is a reflection of the pride of the unit.

Again, it is our job as leaders to ensure that the soldiers have a safe and productive area to work in. Many times clean up is not done because we are too busy and in a rush to get things done. But we could increase productivity just by ensuring the soldiers feel good about their surroundings. We owe it to the soldier to make this happen.
