Why Virginia is a "Commonwealth"

The Flag of Virginia bears the Great Seal of the Commonwealth on a field of blue. The seal depicts the goddess "Virtus." She is dressed as an Amazon, armed with a spear and sword, and stands over a defeated despot. The seal displays the State Motto,"Sic Semper Tyrannis," which is Latin for, "Thus Always to Tyrants."
The Merriam-Webster online dictionary defines a commonwealth as: a nation, state, or other political unit: as: one founded on law and united by compact or tacit agreement of the people for the common good. So is with the Commonwealth of Virginia.  Originally settled in 1607 at Jamestowne, The territory now know as Virginia came to be the birthplace of a nation. Just a few miles away, Williamsburg began the establishment of what exist of our government today. Some years later, Yorktown became the turning point in our nation, establishing it once and for all a power to be reckon with.

Virginians today still maintains to be the pioneers of our great nation by not forgetting where it all began. Virginia is known as the Mother of Presidents, has more military personnel than any other state, has the largest naval base in the free world, home to several federal government entities, recreation areas on the ocean, inland waterways, wetlands, rivers and streams, and the mountains. Virginia holds two of natures most wonderful treasures, the Shenandoah Valley and the Chesapeake Bay.
